Rayshele Kamke Bio

Rayshele Kamke (BA, Metro State) is a BIPOC Hudson-based artist focused on Portraiture artwork including drawings, paintings and photography. She is an enrolled member of Leech Lake Reservation. She has exhibited in group exhibitions including; Student Salon, Gordon Parks Gallery at Metropolitan State University, Indigenous Sovereignty & Environmental Justice and Resilient Generations at Solidarity Street Gallery, White and Black at the Hallberg Center for the Arts, We are Still Here at Friedli Gallery, Land and Body Sovereignty and Roots at Kouba Gallery, Native Voices of Power at FOK Studios and a solo show at Woodbury Central Park.Kamke has received awards such as, Metro State Art Purchase Award in 2021, 2024, 2026, as well as the Harlan Boss Award for the Arts scholarship in 2026. She has been commissioned to create several portraits as well as being hired for her photography for events and professional portraits. Kamke works out of her home studio in Hudson, WI.

Artist Statement

My artistic practice centers on portraiture and explores themes of identity, culture, belonging, and the human experience. Working in charcoal, pastels, acrylic paint, and photography, I use art as a means of cultural connection, self-discovery, and a visual way of storytelling.As an enrolled member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, my Indigenous heritage is deeply woven into my work. Through portraiture, I seek to uncover and honor Indigenous identity, celebrate cultural resilience, and bring greater visibility to contemporary issues affecting Indigenous communities, including Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW).I believe art can do more than capture a likeness; it can evoke emotion, reveal stories, challenge perspectives, and invite deeper understanding. My hope is that viewers are drawn into the stories behind each piece, leaving with a sense of curiosity, connection, and a desire to learn more. Through my work, I strive to create meaningful understanding and conversations and contribute to greater awareness of the experiences and issues that deserve to be seen and heard.
