Artist Statement

My art primarily focuses on portraiture work. I use different mediums like charcoal, pastels, acrylic paint, and photography. My work helps me connect more to my culture and gives me a stronger sense of identity and belonging. I am an enrolled member of Leech Lake Reservation, Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. I am a BIPOC artist and use my art as one way to help bring awareness to contemporary issues for native people. I often focus on these contemporary issues in my art. One of those issues are MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women), they are ten times more likely to go missing or murdered than the average person. I hope my art evokes emotion from people and draws them in to learn more about the piece and that it sparks curiosity in their mind on the topic. I hope this curiosity leads to them sharing what they learn within their community. Bringing awareness and better visibility can lead to further research and resources to support these issues.
